Columbian High School class of 1955 celebrated its 55th reunion August 20-22. The weekend began August 20 at Somerset Reception Hall with a sandwich buffet. 55 classmates and 35 guests attended. Beverages and snacks preceded the meal. The tables were covered in blue and gold with table cards of 1955 cars. Dale Griffis, President announced the Betsy Vogt Rueb had fallen and would be unable to attend. Everyone signed a get well card for her. Sue Saul Schrecongost offered a few words about her excitement at being able to attend. The evening was spent visiting with classmates and guests. Coach Richard Butdorf and Mrs. Butdorf were special guests.
Saturday found 9 classmates at Clinton Heights Golf course for a friendly morning of golf, with Ken Hoeltzel victorious. Bing Fowler organized the golfers. Bob Hunt of Heidelberg University conducted a walking tour of new buildings on campus in the morning. Bob and Carol Yager and Judy Smith greeted classmates at Crystal Traditions for a tour and demonstration Saturday afternoon. Saturday evening found everyone back at Somerset for a wonderful buffet dinner, catered by Krista Collins and staff. The tables were beautifully decorated with blue and gold ribbon streamers, topped with votive candle bowls filled with blue and gold sand. Fall leaves scattered on the tables added ambience to the event. Large Blue and gold bows decorated the bar and welcomed the class as they entered the building. Decorations were prepared by Lynn Griffis Frankart. Dale Griffis welcomed the class and guests and Ken Killen remembered the deceased classmates and presented a reading “Afterglow”. Aivars Smitchens offered the blessing. Dale G. conducted the business meeting after dinner. Those offering remarks were, Verjean Margraf Smitchens, Don Gossett, Ken Killen. Tom Keen presented an Ogden Nash poem “The Octopus” and introduced our class president of 1955, Al Jackson. Al spoke briefly to the class. It took us 55 years to find Al and needless to say the class was glad to see him again and he was glad to be back. Al now resides in Winston-Salem, NC. New officers were elected. The next reunion will be held in 2015.
Sunday morning 35 class members and guests attended a farewell brunch at TJ Willies. The class said their goodbyes and departed.
